In England, the Disabled Facilities Grant can cover up to £30,000 of the cost of adapting your home. Some councils go further than this, so it's always worth asking.
How much you receive usually depends on your household income and any savings over £6,000 — so if you're on a lower income, you may well receive the full amount. If you have a higher income, you may be asked to contribute toward the cost.
The Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is government funding that can help pay for essential work to your home — including your kitchen — to make it safer and easier to live in.
To qualify, either you or someone else living in the property must have a disability. You'll also need to be the homeowner, tenant, or — in some cases — the landlord of the property.
The key thing the council wants to know is straightforward: is the work genuinely necessary for the person with a disability, and is it practical to carry out given the age and condition of the property? If the answer to both is yes, you're on solid ground.
You need to intend to stay living in the property for the duration of the grant period, which is usually five years (though this can be shorter in certain circumstances, such as for someone who is terminally ill).
The work should be completed within 12 months of your grant being approved.
Don't start any work before your application is approved — if you do, you may not receive any funding at all.
If planning permission or building regulations approval is needed, that's a separate application. Your council may also ask for a qualified architect or surveyor to oversee the work, and if so, the grant can contribute toward their fees too.
That's exactly where I can help. I work alongside Occupational Therapists and have experience supporting clients through the grant process in the Leeds and Harrogate areas. I'm happy to have an informal chat about your situation, completely free of charge, before you commit to anything.
